Cyndi Boste

C Y N D I    B O S T E

"Get a load of this Chick if you're serious about your roots music. Her new album, 'Push Comes To Shove' is a minor classic, bursting with melodies that will wander through your dreams and comfort you in moments of weakness. Full of open hearted sentiments and vocals that cut through to the bone, if the woman wasn't known to those with a fondness for blues and country then she soon will be."   Craig N Pearce - Drum Media - July 2002

"Boste has the kind of deep dark voice that can imply gospel as easily as hard country. She has lived in it and knows how to blend it to give both toughness and softness that comes from someone who knows emotions can hurt, but they're the only things you've got to play with.

Listen to her handle, with equal conviction, the rough-hewn soul of 'To My Left' and the weary country blues of 'Run', and then sink into the leather seat of the pickup truck that is the jaunty 'Take My Hand'. By that time, you will have signed up for the full journey: slide guitar, dobro, wurlitzer, Cyndi and you. "

(review written by Matthew Maloney)
Just what is 'roots' music? We certainly hear the term everywhere, often
describing artists seeking to avoid being boxed or pigeonholed in a genre
not necessarily of their choosing.   Usually 'country'.  Why is that? Simple,
because too many punters carry an automatic "I don't like country music"
reflex.    I don't know why either. I think roots music is acoustic based music that
has it's roots firmly in the blues.   However, I might describe it more
loosely as music that's a little too bluesy for country or music that's a
 little too country for blues!
Well known sideman, Dave Steel opened the show with a selection of songs
from his current excellent album, "HOME IS A HARD THING TO FIND".   Dave's
own accompaniment on acoustic slide guitar and cittern (like a ten string
mando on steroids) was all class.   Not too busy, not too sparse.   Like Baby
 Bear's porridge!
Although solidly rooted in the blues, Dave Steel's sentiments, stories and
his wonderfully clear and assured singing have a very local resonance
Cyndi Boste joined Dave and commenced to surprise an  appreciative
audience right from the 'get go'.    Cyndi's set list is drawn from her debut
album HOME TRUTHS and her current release "PUSH COMES TO SHOVE".
An accomplished guitarist herself, Cyndi's playing was complimented by
Dave's tasty licks on dobro,  tele, slide and harmony vocals. Cyndi's songs
cover a wide range of subjects from the state of the heart to the state of
the world to the joy of the neighbourhood.   The sheer quality of Cyndi
Boste's songwriting, not to mention the ability to deliver them with soul
was obvious.   In a set of perhaps twenty songs, (one cover, a beautiful
version of Emmylou Harris's "Black Hawke" and "White Dove") you could hear a
pin drop during the last one.   An encore of course!
THIS WAS BEFORE AN  AUDIENCE TO WHOM CyINDi BOSTE AND HER SONGS WERE LARGELY UNKNOWN.
Cyndi's albums "HOME TRUTHS" and "PUSH COMES TO SHOVE" and Dave Steel's "HOME
IS A HARD THING TO FIND" are available through Black Market Music. Hassle

CYNDI BOSTE – ROOTS AND ALL

Melbourne’s sweetheart of roots music Cyndi Boste will be touring her enigmatic second release ‘Push Comes to Shove’ in July.

The CD comes four years on from her debut ‘Home Truths’.  Dubbed the local Queen of Roots Music Boste makes you ache with empathy as stories of forgotten promise, lost love, and family breakdown unfold in all too real scenarios.

Like so many local roots musician’s airplay can be hard to come by. ABC Radio liked her so much they included her on last years ABC ‘Airplay’ compilation. The first single from her latest offering ‘To My Left’ is receiving airplay nationally.

Vika and Linda Bull like Cyndi so much they have just recorded ‘Holy Water’ from Push Comes to Shove.

Her CD launch at the Corner Hotel broke all records for a Monday with 260 Melbourne punters choosing Cyndi over the usual takeaway and TV.  This turn out reflects the esteem with which peers and fans hold Cyndi alike.

Subtle intellect and raw energy combine to bring a demands attention.

Cyndi will be featuring songs from her new CD “Push Comes to Shove” as well as some old favourites from her 1999 release “Home Truths”.

Joining her will be Dave Steel of Weddings Parties Anything fame and artist in his own right, as well as Gerry Hale of Uncle Bill (Smoke with Paul Kelly).

The Sydney launch of her CD will feature Bill Chambers and Audrey Auld in support.  Both have CD releases due later this year.

After all when Push comes to shove even the most stubborn of us will take a chance.
